Multi-Infarct Dementia: A Historical Perspective
نویسندگان
چکیده
BACKGROUND Multi-infarct dementia (MID), a prominent subtype of vascular dementia (VaD), has only achieved recognition in the last 4 decades. Since its original description, the characterization, etiological understanding, and therapeutic direction of MID and other VaD subtypes has progressed at an astounding rate. SUMMARY This paper divides the landmark discoveries and emergence of new research strategies for MID into decade-defining patterns so that a condensed picture of the total history of MID and its eventual inclusion as a VaD subtype emerges. This paper follows the first descriptive decade, a shift to a preventative focus, a renewed interest coinciding with timely advances in research technology, and a hopeful return to treatment possibilities for VaD. KEY MESSAGE Concisely tracing the historical lineage of the modern understanding of MID, both as a singular entity and as part of the VaD con-stellation of disorders, provides a novel perspective on the foundation upon which future advances in combating vascular contributions to dementia will be based.

Cognition and cerebral blood flow fluctuate together in multi-infarct dementia.
Longitudinal measurements of cognitive ability measured by serial testing using the Cognitive Capacity Screening Examination (CCSE) were correlated with cerebral blood flow (CBF) throughout (mean +/- SD) 19.9 +/- 12.6 months among 57 patients with multi-infarct dementia, 17 with dementia of the Alzheimer's type, 10 with both, and among 32 age-matched elderly normal controls. Longitudinal CCSE a...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE We compared cranial computed tomography findings among 58 multi-infarct dementia index cases and 74 multi-infarct control subjects without cognitive impairment to identify potential determinants of multi-infarct dementia. METHODS The cranial computed tomography records of acute ischemic stroke patients with a history of multiple cerebral infarcts were compared to determ...

Hereditary multi-infarct dementia unlinked to chromosome 19q12 in a large Scottish pedigree: evidence of probable locus heterogeneity.
Hereditary multi-infarct dementia is a rare autosomal dominant disorder that predominantly affects the cerebral white matter. A locus was recently mapped in French pedigrees to chromosome 19q12. We have examined a large Scottish pedigree with neuropathologically confirmed hereditary multi-infarct dementia using polymorphic DNA markers spanning the 19q12 region and found no evidence of linkage. ...
